The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) announced the winner of the 2021 Canadian Car of the Year award on March 30th, choosing the Mazda3 for the second year in a row.
The 2021 Mazda3 is offered with the new 2.5L turbocharged Skyactiv-G engine producing best-in-class torque; it won over the judges with top marks for throttle response, engine refinement and vehicle dynamics. With this victory, the Mazda3 marks several firsts in the history of AJAC awards; The Mazda3 is the only model to have won the Canadian Car of the Year award twice in a row, and the only one to have earned it three times.
The fourth generation Mazda3 has been redesigned for 2019, revealing a new level of refinement and craftsmanship within the compact car segment; it quickly gained favor with fans and the media. The Mazda3 won AJAC's Canadian Car of the Year grand prize in 2020, the first year it was eligible. The 2021 Mazda3 is offered in sedan or hatchback (Mazda3 Sport) with a choice of a 2.0L or 2.5L Skyactiv-G engine, or a 2.5L turbocharged engine and manual transmission Skyactiv 6-speed (on some models) or an automatic transmission.
With the recent launch of the 2021 Mazda3 turbo, Mazda is adding a lot of appeal to a model that already offers multiple body styles, several engine and transmission options meant to satisfy all drivers, and plenty of features at every level.
At the top of the lineup, the turbo Mazda3 GT rises above common segment options, and offers a new alternative to enthusiasts seeking a premium driving experience. Combining responsive torque on demand at any speed, i-Activ all-wheel drive that provides added confidence in any driving situation, and advanced technology, the Mazda3 turbo delivers a refined, yet exhilarating drive, and AJAC journalists seem to agree on that.
In the 2021 midsize car category, AJAC journalists gave the Mazda3 top marks in a number of areas: Style / Appearance, Quality, Driver Position and Ergonomics, Noise / Vibration / Comfort, performance, vehicle dynamics and safety. It also received the highest score for subjective value among all cars in the segment.
With this victory, the four generations of the Mazda3 were recognized by AJAC, having already won the title of Canadian Car of the Year in 2004 and 2020, as well as the awards in its category in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2018 and 2020.
