Following the lead of the Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback, the CX-30 small crossover is getting a number of changes for the 2024 model year. It will go on sale in the coming weeks.
Most notably, the base 2.0-litre engine (155 horsepower, 150 lb-ft. of torque) has been dropped. From this point on, the standard engine will be the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre unit, upgraded from 186 horsepower to 191 horsepower. Peak torque is still rated at 186 lb-ft. Fuel consumption ratings are the same, too, with a combined 8.2 L/100 km).
All 2024 Mazda CX-30 models come with all-wheel drive. The entry-level GX, which also loses amenities such as rain-sensing wipers, HD radio and navigation-ready infotainment, now starts at $28,150—an increase of $1,100 from 2023—not to mention $2,095 for freight and PDI. Mazda Connected Services is complementary for two years.
Next up is the CX-30 GS at $31,450, which adds the full standard suite of i-Activsense safety equipment including adaptive cruise control, emergency braking assist, pedestrian detection (forward sensing), lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, high beam control and driver attention alert.
The GS Luxury package is back, requiring a premium of $2,200. It elevates comfort and technology, particularly by upgrading the 8.8-inch centre display to a 10.25-inch unit that includes touchscreen functionality when using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a bit too far out of reach for driver-friendly operation, though.
The CX-30 GT retails from $37,550 for 2024, making it $1,000 more expensive. This model gains wireless phone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as two USB-C ports to accommodate faster charging. Also new is the inclusion of Cruising and Traffic Support.
Moving one step above, you’ll find the GT Turbo at $39,950. The turbocharged 2.5-litre engine doesn’t change, delivering 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft. of torque when running on premium 93 octane fuel or 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque with regular 87 octane fuel.
The turbo engine also powers the new Suna Edition of the 2024 Mazda CX-30. Finished in exclusive Zircon Sand Metallic with 18-inch black metallic wheels, the top-line addition further stands out with Terracotta leatherette and black suede-trimmed seats.
If you think paying over 40 grand is too much for such a small crossover, remember that performance and refinement are way above the competition. At the same time, the CX-30 proves cheaper than similarly equipped luxury crossovers.
